Rumor: Slightly improved Motorola Defy could land on AT&T soon

It’s been almost a year since Motorola announced the Defy, but it certainly feels like an eternity. I even had to fire up trusty Wikipedia just so I could remember the little details. The medium-sized rugged phone was welcomed to the Android world with relatively positive reviews back then. And one could say, even today, the Defy would be a great choice for an affordable Android phone. Having said that, its modest specs were quickly surpassed by faster and bigger devices, making us forget all about the Defy.

While us Android enthusiasts might have forgotten about the Motorola Defy and its mid-end specs by now, Motorola certainly hasn’t. According to the fine chaps over at This Is My Next, Motorola is working on an upgraded version of the Motorola Defy. Supposedly, this new-and-improved Defy won’t be much different from the original Defy. Only the Android version and the processor have changed.
The Defy’s current 800 MHz Texas Instruments OMAP 3610 processor will be replaced by the slightly better 1 GHz OMAP 3620. Likewise, the Defy 2.0 will replace Froyo with Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. Aside from those two changes, TIMN doesn’t expects much else to change. Therefore, we can expect the new Defy to launch with specs similar to these:

3.7-inch screen with a 480 x 854 pixels resolution
512 MB of RAM
5 MP rear-facing camera with LED flash

Not bad for a mid-end device. Although, a front-facing camera and NFC support wouldn’t hurt. If Motorola manages to sell this for less than $100, I can see a lot of people snapping these ups like hotcakes. As for carrier availability, TIMN believes the phone will support 850 / 1900 / 2100 HSPA, making it a perfect candidate for AT&T. However, I wouldn’t rule out a T-Mobile version at this point.
